Dubai: India’s biggest carrier by market share, IndiGo, has announced the launch of direct flights between Madurai and Abu Dhabi from June 13 this year. Madurai will be the 16th Indian city directly connected to Abu Dhabi for IndiGo.

This news comes after the airline announced direct flights from Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam to the UAE capital.

The new Madurai flights will run three times a week, making international travel easier and more affordable for Indian travellers in the UAE heading home.

By linking smaller cities like Madurai to major global hubs, IndiGo said it aims to open up new opportunities. This direct flight will help businesses easily send farm products, textiles, and other goods from the Madurai area to the UAE and other countries, boosting local businesses and helping the economy grow.

For travellers, direct flight means no more connecting flights, cutting down travel time for business people, students, and families. This makes for a much smoother travel experience.

Last week, IndiGo also launched direct flights between Fujairah and Mumbai and Fujairah and Kannur in Kerala.

With this new route, IndiGo now flies over 280 times a week to five cities in the UAE from 20 Indian cities.

The airline has been on a network expansion spree since the start of this year. All these expansions also follow IndiGo’s recent announcement of new services from India to Manchester and Amsterdam Schiphol, scheduled to commence in July 2025.

These routes are part of the airline’s ambition to connect the Indian market with key European destinations. IndiGo will fly the Norse Atlantic Airways’ aircraft on these longer-haul routes as an interim solution, eventually replacing them with its fleet of Airbus A350-900s.

The airline has 30 wide-body A350-900 aircraft on order from Airbus, with the first delivery expected in 2027.
