Need for more parks and public spaces

Last updated:

The blistering pace of development in Dubai has led to criticism from some over the gaps in provision of community services and urban amenities.

This is one of the issues that the Dubai Urban Development Framework will challenge. As part of this framework, legislation will be implemented to ensure that all development in the emirate is brought together under a master plan. It will ensure that the needs of the residents will be considered in regard to a range of topics that include, among others, traffic and affordable housing.

One issue for consideration is the lack of parks and open spaces available, particularly in older areas. As Dubai continues to develop and more purpose-built communities appear, there is a need to consider some of the more developed communities, to make sure that the needs of residents in those areas are also met.

Bur Dubai and Karama

With each new development, tenants' needs are considered, and building from scratch makes it easier to provide for those needs. Developers look at the key elements of modern lifestyles and build accordingly. Most of the new communities come with leisure facilities and parks.

The same cannot be said for areas such as Bur Dubai and Karama. As one of the largest residential areas in Dubai, Bur Dubai is home to many families. There have been efforts to improve park provision in Dubai with investment in both Zabeel and Safa parks. The problem is that for many people, a visit to either one of those requires driving there, which is not always a simple task in Dubai.

There has been much said about the shortage of sports facilities across the emirate. The imminent closure of the Exiles Club has created a shortage of sports pitches and with little or no alternative locations, sport in Dubai is suffering. Sports City will be home to several world-class sporting facilities, but they are likely to be reserved for top class events with only limited access for those of us who play for the love of the game rather than because of our immense talent.

A lot of great childhood memories stem from playing at the local park or playground. Admittedly, Dubai's climate doesn't lend itself well to this type of activity all year round, but there are several months of the year when there is nothing better than spending an afternoon in the park kicking a ball around. We have front row seats at the development of one of the most exciting cities in the world. As Dubai continues to create communities fit for a king it's vital the older districts are not forgotten.
