A team of specialists from the Arab Company for Livestock Development (Acolid) has recommended the establishment of an egg and chick factory in the UAE.

The Ras Al Khaimah facility would cover the UAE's requirements for chicken products.

After returning from a visit to the UAE, the team said the companies involved in this business were importing all their annual needs of chicks.

Dr Abdullah Al Thuna-yan, the company's director-general, told Gulf News the company had sent a delegation to Ras Al Khaimah at the invitation of the Ruling Family to study investment opportunities and the prospects for establishing projects that would meet the needs of the country.

The technical and economic unit of the company based in Riyadh concluded a feasibility study on a project in Ras Al Khaimah to produce eggs for local consumption.

The company's director-general said that the investment costs for the first stage of the project were estimated at Dh30 million, and that operating costs would hit Dh2.8 million and anticipated revenues at Dh9.11 million.

The Arab Company for Livestock Development is a company owned jointly by Arab governments as part of several projects that are designed to contribute towards achieving food security in the Arab world.

He said that the company's total investment in the UAE amounted to Dh600 million.

This includes Acolid-Ras Al Khaimah and Acolid-Fujairah and the Arab Poultry Production Company in Fujairah, a project for the production of chicks in Sharjah and a company engaged in the production of poultry and livestock equipment.
