Dubai: 2024 was a great year for cryptocurrencies, particularly for those smaller, more speculative form of the digital asset. Industry-leader Bitcoin is up more than 130%, while the meme token Shiba Inu (SHIB) has soared by more than 180%.

While the price of SHIB has ranged between $0.000030 and $0.000024 in recent weeks, it has been still trading 65% below its all-time high. This record was set during 2021, when it delivered a stupendously high return of 45,278,000 per cent – then turning an investment of $3 into more than $1 million – before the speculative frenzy that drove the rally then fizzled out.

However, now that Shiba Inu has recovered some of its momentum, could it soar to $1 from its current price of $0.00003 any time soon, which would not to mention would make it an incredibly high yield – albeit at just as high risk of an investment?

“For Shiba Inu to hit the $1 mark, it would require a massive increase in its market cap, which currently stands at around $16 billion,” Brian Deshell, a UAE-based cryptocurrency trader and analyst. “To put it into perspective, if SHIB were to reach $1, its market capitalisation would balloon to more than $500 trillion, far exceeding the total global financial market.

Highly unrealistic

“This seems highly unrealistic given the vast supply of tokens circulating – there are over 589 trillion SHIB tokens in circulation, a supply that would be difficult to absorb even with large-scale institutional investments.”

Shiba Inu’s price movements are also heavily influenced by its meme status, with speculative trading driving much of its volatility, added Deshell, meaning the token lacks significant technological innovation or real-world use cases that could sustain long-term value.

“While it has gained a devoted following, much of the enthusiasm is based on community-driven hype and the "fear of missing out" (FOMO), rather than a strong business or utility model. This leaves SHIB vulnerable to rapid price corrections and shifts in investor sentiment.

“Despite its speculative nature, Shiba Inu has found a niche in the broader cryptocurrency market, particularly within the meme-coin space. However, for SHIB to see substantial long-term growth, it will need to prove that it can offer something beyond speculation – perhaps through more partnerships, real-world applications, or unique use cases.”

Verdict?

Despite having a market valuation of more than $16 billion and sporadic price fluctuations, SHIB’s yearly chart shows higher highs and lower lows, indicating potential but restrained growth. Owing to its limited uses, market cap, and large supply, SHIB is unlikely to reach $1.

The popularity of Shiba Inu is majorly fueled by popularity rather than groundbreaking inventions. As smaller-cap tokens demonstrate rapid rises, SHIB risks being overshadowed by projects offering tangible solutions in diverse industries.
