ABU DHABI: YUPP TV, an online TV platform has made its debut in the UAE as the first ‘legal’ set top box to provide family entertainment. Until now the service was provided by du and etisalat.

YUPP TV, which works on a ‘Netflix’ model, offers over 150 South Asian channels, including drama, sports and kids entertainment.

“This is approved by the TRA and it works over the internet unlike DishTV or Tata Sky that rely on satellite signals. The user connects Scope (set top box) to the TV via an HDMI cable.

“On switching it on, the user will be asked to connect the box to the internet via Wi-Fi,” said Abhishek Thakkar, vice-president, business development for Middle East and Asia at YUPP TV.

Bollywood movies

YUPP TV’s content boasts of 3,000 Bollywood and regional movies, apart from daily soaps. “Our content mainly comes from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh,” he added.

Tailormade packages are also available and customers can pick from a wide menu of Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali and Nepalese channels. A year’s subscription starts at Dh499.

Apart from refreshing the content every few weeks, YUPP TV claims it provides some innovative services such as the “Catch up TV” and “Time-Shift”.

“These features aren’t offered on DTH platforms. Users can watch the past 10 days of programming on Catch TV and can pause or rewind Live Channels for up to two hours using “Time-shift”,” added Thakkar.

YUPP TV Scope boxes can be picked up at any Carrefour outlet in the UAE or ordered online on www.yupptv.com.
