Construction starts on power station on Yellow River
Beijing: China began work yesterday on a $1.79 billion hydroelectric project which will become the biggest dam on the Yellow River, state media reported. The 250 metre-high dam, the highest on the Yellow River, is expected to have 4,200 megawatts of installed generation capacity and will be able to produce 10.22 billion kilowatt hours annually, the report said.
German businessman stabbed to death
Manila: Some men broke into the home of a German businessman in the north and stabbed him to death, police said yesterday. The suspected robbers broke into the apartment of 52-year-old Hanz Holz in Angeles City on Friday and surprised him while he was watching television. They stabbed him in his neck and hogtied his Filipina wife before fleeing with cash and valuables, the police said.
DepEd staff reject Lapus as secretary
Manila: The employees union of the Department of Education's (DepEd) recently said they would conduct mass actions nationwide if Rep. Jesli Lapus is appointed secretary. Domingo Alidon, president of the union, said they reject Lapus? a politician, as the next education secretary. "We are dismayed by politicians. It's a slap on the face if an outsider assumes the post," he said.
Dog still staple food in Northern Luzon
Luzon: The Northern Luzon region, especially Baguio City, still consumes a lot of dog meat despite the presence of a law banning the killing of dogs. Residents said dogs have fine meat that gives them warmth in the cold weather. Dog traders continue to enjoy brisk business in Baguio by selling dog meat for $4.90 (Dh18) to $7.80 (Dh28.6) depending on the size and weight.
