Australia: Fast food giant KFC has withdrawn an Australian television advertising campaign branded in the United States as racist in its depiction of a white Australian cricket fan giving black West Indian fans fried chicken.

The campaign is linked to a forthcoming competition between Australia and West Indies.

The advertisement ran for three weeks without raising a ripple of complaint in Australia where there is no cultural association between its black population and fried chicken.

The controversy over the advertisement has puzzled many Australians.

The Age newspaper published an internet poll showing that among more than 6,600 respondents or 86 per cent did not think it was racist.
