Bulgaria pulls lasagne for horsemeat tests

Sofia: Bulgaria on Saturday ordered lasagne dishes pulled from the shelves as they may contain horsemeat, adding another country to those affected by the Europe-wide scandal over mislabelled meat.

Bulgaria's food safety agency said it had ordered 86kg of meat lasagne dishes to be withdrawn by a supermarket chain it did not identify.

"Sales of the lasagne were suspended and tests are being conducted to determine the nature of the meat used," the agency said in a statement.

The European Union on Friday agreed the immediate launch of tests for horse DNA in meat products, seeking to reassure nervous consumers after horsemeat was sold as beef in prepared dishes in several EU countries.
