7 held, including ex-boyfriend, after body of 22-year-old found in Istanbul
Dubai: The brutal killing of Ayşe Tokyaz, a 22-year-old nursing student whose dismembered body was found inside a suitcase in Istanbul, has sent shockwaves across Turkey and ignited widespread public outrage over violence against women, according to Turkish media.
Tokyaz, a student at an Istanbul-based university, was reported missing last week after her twin sister, Israa, lost contact with her.
Her body was later discovered in the Küçükçekmece district of the city, leading to the arrest of seven individuals, including her former boyfriend, Cemil Koç, a former police officer.
Authorities said preliminary investigations revealed that Tokyaz had suffered sustained physical abuse prior to her death. On the evening of July 9, she was reportedly taken to a residence in Istanbul, where she was beaten to death, https://turkey-breaking.com reported.
The case took an even darker turn when officials discovered that the suspect had attempted to offer 500,000 Turkish liras (approximately $15,000) to a taxi driver to help conceal and dispose of the body. Surveillance footage confirmed Tokyaz’s final moments entering the building where the crime occurred.
Her remains were later transported to her family’s hometown in the Reyhanlı district for burial, where an emotional funeral was held.
Those arrested remain in custody and are expected to be formally charged as investigations continue. The case has prompted renewed calls for stronger protections for women and harsher penalties for gender-based violence in Turkey, where such crimes remain a deeply rooted concern.
