Beirut: Lebanese security officials say a gunman in a car has fired on a group of Syrians demonstrating in Beirut in support of their government. One person was wounded.

The officials say the shooting occurred in a north Beirut suburb while dozens of Syrians were heading toward the Syrian Embassy to show support for their regime as it faces nationwide protests calling for political freedom.

They say 42-year-old Syrian Issa Mohammed Ali was wounded in the stomach and rushed to hospital.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to speak to the media. The gunman fled in his car.

The officials say another group of pro-regime Syrians clashed with anti-Syrian Lebanese in a west Beirut neighbourhood but there were no injuries.
