In war-torn Gaza, where fuel is scarce and roads are dangerous, AFP video journalist Youssef Hassouna walks up to 15 kilometres daily to report the news. On some days, he covers as much as 25 kilometres on foot under intense heat, often wearing out his shoes in just a month—a stark contrast to the six months they once lasted.

After nearly two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, Gaza has been devastated. With severe shortages of food, water, and medicine, documenting life there has become a battle of its own. More than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to local health authorities, and most of the population is displaced.

Hassouna’s biggest challenge isn’t just reporting—it’s survival. Once weighing 110 kilograms, he now weighs around 65 kilograms, having shed weight due to a lack of food. Amid the rubble and ruin, he continues to capture Gaza’s painful reality, step by exhausting step.
