Dubai: The Eastern Province Municipality of Al Khobar has inaugurated the first mobile Drive-ThrU Food Truck grocery stores selling fruits and vegetables in a bid to prevent overcrowding in supermarkets and curve the spread of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia.

According to the daily Okaz newspaper, a dozen points of sale in air-conditioned cabins at the new fruit and vegetable market have been set which allow customers to shop directly from their vehicles.

The new Drive-Thru Food Trucks also give Saudi youth an opportunity to sell their products safely.

Sultan bin Hamid Al Zaidi, the mayor of Al Khobar, said that this innovative market commenced operations on Friday. It covers an area of 6,500 sq. meters in the parking lots of the “Iskan Square” Park in southern Al Khobar.

The municipality has coordinated with Saudi youth who own food trucks to benefit from the project.

Al Zaidi added that the municipality prepared the site for the market and provided 10 workers to clean the area daily during working hours of the market which is open from from 8am. to7pm.

Health supervisors from the municipality will be available at the site along with security and safety supervisors to ensure compliance of all safety protocols by staff and visitors alike.
