Cairo: Two vehicles collided near the Saudi north-western city of Hail, claiming nine lives, the Saudi online newspaper Sabq reported Saturday.

A Saudi family of five members were riding in one vehicle while there were four Pakistani workers inside the second.

The collision on a road in the Governorate of Al Hait caused both vehicles to burst into flames and killing all their passengers, according to civil defence officials.

Local traffic police and medical services rushed to the scene of the accident and carried the bodies of the deceased to a hospital morgue in Al Hait.

A 17-year-old son is the only survivor of the family as he was in the house in Hail at the time of the crash, sources said. Condolences poured in from workmates of the dead family head, who was a policeman that had planned to go on early pension next week, according to the report.

In recent years, Saudi authorities have toughened traffic penalties in an attempt to curb road crashes in the country.
