One killed in elevator crash

Muscat: One person died and four others were injured in a mall elevator crash in Al Khuwair district of Muscat on Monday, according to the General Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (GACDA).

The GACDA post on Facebook stated that all five were trapped when a cable snapped in an elevator. The five workers were reportedly transferring goods at the Safeer Ballroom situated inside the Zaker mall compound.

The Civil Defence officers had to cut open a shaft to take trapped workers out. One of them died on arrival at the Royal Oman police Hospital in Qurum suburb.

No further details were available. The four injured workers were moved to the hospital for treatment.

The GACDA advised malls and buildings to carry out regular maintenance of elevators to avoid such mishaps.
