Dubai: Kuwait’s private schools have been directed to reduce tuition fees by 25 per cent for the upcoming school year, local media reported.
Dr. Saud Al Harbi, Minister of Education, issued a ministerial resolution reducing tuition fees by 25 per cent and called on private schools to commit to online schooling for the 2020-21 academic year until students can return to school normally.
The minister also warned schools against increasing their fees and that the fees cut will remain until the end of the next academic year.
Al Harbi issued another decision cancelling fees for the remaining months of the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year, for pupils at private Arabic schools, from kindergarten to grade 11, due to the closure of schools in March amid the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.
Schools that fail to comply with the new decision will face punitive measures as per the ministry’s’ regulations, the ministry said in a statement carried by the Kuwaiti News Agency.
Meanwhile, foreign private and bilingual schools will have to complete the 2019-2020 school year, with classes to resume online from Aug 4, 2020, five days a week.
Private schools informed pupils and parents that online classes will resume to complete the second term for all school stages. Earlier this month, private schools were excluded from the ministry’s decision on ending the 2019-2020 school year.
