The world's largest flag will be raised in Bahrain on National Day, the official news agency said yesterday.

The move is part of Bahrain's 33rd National Day celebrations, which will get underway on December 13 with the raising of the world's largest national flag at the National Stadium, the Bahrain News Agency said.

National Day will be celebrated on December 16.

The week-long celebrations will also include a carnival, fireworks on three nights, a vintage car and photographic exhibitions, and a music festival, the agency quoted organising committee chairman Ebrahim Noor as saying. He is also the Information Ministry's public relations director.

The national flag, which measures 160 metres long and 100 metres wide, will be the largest flag of its kind in the world and will find a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, he said.

"The largest flag now available in the world is in California, and a team from the Guinness World Records will be in Bahrain during the National Day celebrations to finalise the Bahrain flag's entry into the book of records," he was quoted as saying.

"The flag, which will weigh 4,000kg, is currently being made in a factory in China and will be airlifted to Bahrain during the first week of next month.

"It will be raised at the car park grounds adjacent to the National Stadium on December 13," he added.
