Dubai: A popular social media influencer in Bahrain is under investigation for animal cruelty after activists accused him of exploiting and neglecting his pet donkey, Tahin, for online content despite the animal’s apparent injuries.

The Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) filed a formal complaint with authorities this week after reviewing footage on the influencer’s Instagram account showing Tahin struggling with a visibly broken leg.

Mahmood Faraj, the society’s head, said a review of the account revealed multiple posts over the past month in which the donkey appeared lame, with no evidence of proper medical intervention.

“This animal has been repeatedly used for stunts and filming while clearly suffering,” Faraj told local media. “There was no regard for its pain or well-being.”

The case has drawn widespread attention in Bahrain, where animal welfare laws carry penalties of up to three months in prison or fines of 20 dinars ($53) for mistreatment of domesticated animals under Article 416 of the Penal Code.

In response to the allegations, the donkey’s owner is said to have visited a police station in Muharraq, insisting that Tahin had received veterinary care and that their bond spanned five years.

The BSPCA said it would continue pushing for Tahin to receive proper medical attention and urged authorities to take stronger action against animal exploitation for social media clout.
