Cairo: Bahrain has converted a number of public buses into mobile testing units in an effort to stem the spread of the new coronavirus in the kingdom, a government minister has said. Bahrain so far has reported 2,518 coronavirus cases including eight deaths.

Minister of Transport and Communications Kamal Bin Ahmad Mohammad said that the ministry in cooperation with the Health Ministry and the Bahrain Company for Public Transport took the step to support random tests for the highly contagious disease across the country.

The buses have been turned into mobile well-equipped units in line with medical standards, the minister was quoted by Bahraini newspaper Al Bilad as saying.

The units were launched into service in Manama on Thursday manned by doctors and nurses from the Health Ministry and employees to register data, the paper said.

The medical team conducted random tests on samples of people out on Manama roads. The units are planned to carry out daily tests as part of precautions aimed to curb the spread of COVID-19.
