West Midlands Police said one person sustained minor injuries. Officers were among the emergency crews that responded.
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it received a call at 1:45 p.m. about an incident involving a light aircraft.
In a post on X, Birmingham Airport said: “Following an aircraft incident, the runway is temporarily closed. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. We will keep passengers already at the airport informed, and those due to travel later today are advised to check the status of their flight before coming to the airport. We will continue to issue updates when we can.”
A later update from the airport said the runway was likely to remain closed until 8:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT).
Footage shared online showed a small white plane lying flat on the tarmac.
Check-in and security were also temporarily shut. Passengers were advised to monitor their flight status.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an investigation. A multi-disciplinary team, including experts in aircraft operations, engineering, and recorded data, has been sent to the airport.
