Manila: A fowl in Zamboanga City set off a wild bird chase last week that left four policemen injured.

Reports reaching Manila said a cassowary fowl, a non-indigenous flightless bird, escaped from its pen inside the Zamboanga City aviary in Pasonanca district on Tuesday and fled to the adjacent police training school.

Accounts said that the bird, which is about several times the size of a turkey, went berserk and pecked, grazed and slashed with its claws a group of police officers who were undergoing training.

It was only after several minutes and after four of the police men were injured before the fowl was subdued.

The two who were injured in the bird attack were identified as Inspector Crisanto Yabo and Nicanor Bautista while the two other junior officers were unnamed.

It was learned that it was not the first time that the bird had ran away from its holding enclosure.
