A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck near Mindanao in the Philippines on Thursday just two days after a magnitude 6.7 tremor struck nearby and killed at least seven people, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck 37km west of the city of Davao,, at a depth of 22km.

USGS originally said the quake had a magnitude of 6.8.

There was no threat of a tsunami, USGS added.
