Karachi: The team of foreign veterinary experts associated with the global animal welfare organisation, Four Paws, has again been invited to visit Pakistan for ensuring the recovery of the seriously ill female elephant, Noor Jehan, at the Karachi Zoo.

While briefing media persons, Karachi’s Administrator, Dr Syed Saifur Rehman, said the directions given by the animal experts associated with Four Paws were being fully acted upon to protect Noor Jehan’s health.

He said the local representatives of Four Paws and veterinary doctors associated with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) had been continuously providing the best possible treatment to Noor Jehan.

Dr Rehman told journalists that ailing Noor Jehan was not able to stand on her feet owing to severe weakness. He hoped that treatment and other care measures suggested by Four Paws would soon show positive results allowing Noor Jehan to completely regain her health.

He said the relevant staff and veterinary doctors had been given directions to make sure the availability of whatever treatment was required for the intensive care of Noor Jehan as per the directions of the concerned foreign veterinarians.

He assured media persons that the KMC had been doing its best to keep all the animals at the Karachi Zoo fit and healthy as all the available resources were being spent for the purpose. He said there was no compromise on the safety and welfare of animals and birds at the zoo.

Dr Rehman also went to the enclosure of Noor Jehan and fed her medicines and food.

Earlier, Noor Jehan’s health further deteriorated after she fell into a pond last week. Since then she has been unable to stand.

After Noor Jehan’s fall, a tweet by Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, younger sister of the Chairman of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, went viral in which she called for shutting down Karachi Zoo if it is unable to ensure the welfare of its animals.

Following Bakhtawar’s tweet, Sindh Local Government Minister, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, also rushed to the zoo to inquire about the ailing elephant’s health.

The earlier visit by the veterinary experts associated with Four Paws diagnosed that Noor Jehan has been suffering from hematoma or a pool of clotted blood.
