Islamabad: Police say suspected US missile strikes have hit two hideouts of a Taliban commander in northwest Pakistan, killing at least five people.

Shahab Ali Shah, the top administrative official in the South Waziristan tribal area, says the missiles hit the villages of Gharlamai and Nandaran, about six miles (10 kilometers) west of the Wana bazaar area.

He says it's unclear if the dead are local tribesmen or militants.

Ali Khan Wazir, a shopkeeper, says drone aircraft had been flying over the area for hours before the explosions were heard.
