Islamabad: At least 40 people, including six officers and three soldiers, were killed and more than 80 injured when suicide attackers stormed a mosque on Friday in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, officials said.
Police officer Eislam Tarin said at least four assailants were involved in the attack. Two of them tossed bombs and sprayed gunfire in the mosque frequented by army officers, he said, adding that the attackers were killed by security forces.
Two hours after the attack began, occasional gunshots were still being heard from inside the heavily fortified area.
Interior Minister Rahman Malek told the media that two suicide bombers blew themselves up in the mosque. The roof collapsed and the powerful explosions damaged nearby buildings.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. Suicide attacks in the past were claimed by the banned Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which threatened retaliatory attacks over the security sweep against the Taliban.
