Lahore: Prominent Pakistani lawyer, Aitzaz Ahsan, who led opposition to President Pevez Musharraf was released from four months of detention and house arrest on Sunday, a senior government official said.

Ahsan, a former member of parliament and cabinet minister, was detained hours after Musharraf imposed emergency rule on the country in Novermber last year.

The home secretary of provincial Punjab, Khusro Pervaiz Khan, said that Ahsan was now a free man, adding that there was no need to issue any sort of release order.

Upon his release, Ahsan, a supporter of former Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry , vowed to continue campaigning for lawyers to restore sacked judges.

"We'll continue our fight. We believe there's no independent judiciary until all detained judges are released and restored," he said.
