Islamabad: The high court in Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab on Wednesday disposed of a petition seeking a ban on the screening of Indian movies in the country and asked the mover to approach the relevant forum.

The petition was lodged at the Lahore High Court (LHC) by local film producers and distributors, challenging the exhibition of Bollywood films in Pakistani cinemas.

During the hearing of the case by Justice Syed Mansour Ali Shah the plaintiffs contended that showing Bollywood films in Pakistan was against the country’s import policy 2013 and motion pictures ordinance 1979.

It is also promoting lawlessness and violence in the country, the petitioner claimed.

The local film industry has been in tatters for long, while Indian movies are popular in the country and are screened not only in cinemas but also by private television channels.

Some Pakistani actors have secured contracts to perform in Bollywood movies.
