Karachi: Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Sunday said its decision-making body was considering the names for a caretaker prime minister after President Asif Ali Zardari invited them to submit their nomination.
The MQM sources said that President Zardari called Dr Farooq Sattar, the deputy convener of the Coordination Committee of the party, and asked him to come up with the proposed nomination of the caretaker prime minister.
This was a significant development towards the national elections amid rumours in the political and public circles that there were some elements trying to derail the democratic process in the country or postpone the elections.
The elections are due some time in May or within 90 days of setting up a caretaker government under the constitution of Pakistan. The present national assembly would complete its term on March 16 and the government is committed to dissolving the government and the lower house of the parliament before the deadline so that a caretaker or neutral government could be set up.
The caretaker government would come into power for a maximum of 90 days after the consensus of the ruling and opposition parties.
Earlier, Dr Sattar told the media that he was sure the elections would be held on schedule despite attempts to derail the process.
During a talk on Students Day at a private university, Dr Sattar said there was no reason and logic for demanding verifications of votes. He said any objection on the process of voters list was invalid and unjust.
