Patna: Two young lovers from Bihar ended their lives by hanging themselves from a tree minutes after getting married secretly under the cover of darkness over the weekend. The victims belonged to the same village and the police said they took the extreme step as their parents had opposed the relationship.

Police said Krishna Kumar, 22, and Nitu Kumari, 18, both residents of Masaurhi block in Patna district, had been in love for a year and wanted to get married, but their families opposed this. They belonged to different castes, creating further obstacles in the wedding plan.

In January this year, the youth’s parents got him married to another girl in a bid to end their relationship. The girl’s parents too had fixed her marriage with another youth and her wedding was expected to be solemnized in May. However, they continued meeting each other, irking the respective families.

Eventually, they decided to end their lives together. Late on Saturday night, both of them quietly left their homes and reached a secret place on the outskirts of the village where the youth first put vermillion on the girl’s forehead. Shortly after that they hanged themselves from a tree with the help of scarves.

The local villagers found their bodies hanging from the tree on Sunday morning after which they informed the police, who sent the bodies for autopsy. The police are investigating the case.

“Prima facie it appears they ended their lives after they failed get approval for marriage. Before committing suicide, the youth had filled vermillion in the parting of the girl’s hair as a mark of their marriage,” a local police official Ranjit Kumar Rajak told the media.
