Deputy Commissioner of Police M Venkateshwarulu said that Hemanth and his wife were abducted from their home in TNGOs colony. Avanthi, who jumped out of the car in the outskirts while they were being taken away by the abductors, alerted the police about the incident. By the time police could trace the whereabouts of Hemanth, he was killed in the same car. His body was found dumped in bushes near Sangareddy town, about 50 kms from Hyderabad.

“Hemanth and Avanthi had known each other for 8 years as they lived in the same Chandnagar area and eloped from home on June 10 and got married next day”, police official said.

While Avanthi was from Reddy caste, Hemanth was from Vysya or Bania community.

In its remand diary the police informed the court that Avanthi’s parents along with Yugunder Reddy plotted to take revenge by killing Hemanth as they saw the inter caste marriage an insult to them. “They did not come out of their homes unable to bear the humiliation”, police said in the diary.

It was reminiscent of a similar incident on September 15, 2018 in Miryalguda town of Telangana in which a 23 year old Dalit (lower caste) man Pranay Kumar was killed in day light for marrying an upper caste girl Amrutha. Police later arrested her father Maruthi Rao on the charges of conspiracy to kill but before court could convict him he committed suicide.
