What started as protests against alleged illegal slaughterhouses in the area turned violent and claimed the lives of two people, including a police inspector, Subodh Kumar and a civilian. So far four people have been arrested.

Twitter user @omar7rashid posted the video on Monday with the post: “A police officer was killed in mob violence in Bulandshahr, UP after local outfits first stage jam and then go on a rampage angered by alleged discovery of parts of a dead cow. More details coming in, police on the spot.”

According to the Indo Asian News Service: “The violence had broken out after alleged recovery of some animal carcasses that right-wing organisations claimed were of cows, an animal revered by the Hindus.

"Singh was attacked by the mob when he attempted to clear the traffic snarl caused by the vigilantes carrying the carcasses on tractor trolleys blocking a busy road."

"The Station House Officer of Syana, who had probed the lynching of a Muslim man in the Dadri killling in 2015, also over allegations of cow slaughter, was shot at point blank range by the mob.”

We do not want money. CM only keeps saying cow cow cow.’ #Bulandshahr”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has announced a financial assistance of Rs 40 lakh to the wife of Subodh Kumar Singh and Rs 10 lakh to his parents. The chief minister also announced an extraordinary pension for the dependent family of the deceased inspector and government job for a member of his family.

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday arrested two men and detained four in connection with the mob violence.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), 28 people have been named while 60 people have been listed as unidentified in the Monday’s incident.

The FIR also named Yogesh Raj, reportedly a senior Bajrang Dal leader who had earlier lodged an FIR alleging cow slaughter.

Inspector S.K. Singh was shot in the head, while one of the young agitators was killed as the police tried to tackle the mob.

After some media channels called it communal violence, Twitter user @rohini_sgh wrote: “Dear media. What’s happening in Bulandshahr isn’t a case of ‘communal clashes’. Two communities weren’t clashing. A mob of goons targeted a police officer and shot him dead. The video is there as evidence. The cow, as usual, was used as an excuse for cold blooded murder.”
