Two Bangladeshi nationals who had taken shelter from the rain were crushed to death today when a Jaguar car rammed into them after hitting a Mercedes Benz sedan in Kolkata, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Media reports confirmed that the driver of the Jaguar, a 22-year-old man from a prominent Kolkata family, was arrested after the accident.

Twitter users were quick to share news reports of the crash that took place early Saturday morning. According to the police, the accused was allegedly speeding and crashed into a Mercedes Benz car. Both the vehicles spun out of control and the Jaguar crashed into the victims who were standing nearby at a police outpost.

A third Bangladeshi national who escaped said the two men were crushed against the wall of the police outpost.

According to the Indian news magazine, India Today: "The police in Kolkota have arrested the son of a popular restaurant chain owner after his speeding car mowed down the two Bangladeshi men who were taking shelter from the rain at a traffic control booth installed on a road intersection. The accident took place at the Shakespeare Sarani and Loudon Street crossing around 1.50am (IST) on Saturday."

The two Bangladeshi nationals were rushed to a hospital nearby. However, it was too late, the doctors declared both men "brought dead".

Parwez Arsalan, 22 who was driving the Jaguar and the passengers travelling in the Mercedes suffered minor injuries. The police have seized the Jaguar that bears the registration number WB 20AU 9797. The driver has been booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide), 279 (rash driving) and 427 (causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the report, the two Bangladeshi nationals who died in the accident were identified Farhana Islam Tania (30), a resident of Dhaka, and Kazi Md Mainul Alam (36), from Jhenaidah district in Bangladesh. Police said they were in Kolkata for treatment.
