It’s unclear if the Reuters block is temporary, permanent, or linked to a specific case
The global news agency Reuters’ official X (formerly Twitter) account has been blocked in India following a “legal demand.” Reuters has not yet issued any statement explaining the reason behind the restriction.
As of late Saturday night, users attempting to access the @Reuters handle in India encountered a message stating: “@Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand,” reported CNBC. The @ReutersWorld account was also inaccessible.
While the main Reuters account is blocked, several affiliated handles—including Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Pictures, Reuters Asia, and Reuters China—are still accessible in India.
According to CNBC reports citing X’s content policy, accounts or posts may be withheld in specific countries if the platform receives a “valid legal demand,” such as a court order or a request based on local laws. These demands are typically processed through X’s dedicated legal and support channels.
It is not clear whether the block on Reuters is temporary or permanent, or if it relates to a specific report or legal case. No official comments have been made by Indian authorities or Reuters.
This incident highlights the challenges social media platforms face in balancing legal compliance with freedom of information while operating across multiple countries with different laws.
