Several tourists are feared to have drowned in Pune, rescue operation under way
At least four tourists have died, several more were missing, while 39 people were rescued after they fell into an overflowing river when an old bridge they were crossing collapsed in Maharashtra's Pune district on Sunday according to media reports.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) confirmed its latest figures: 39 individuals have been rescued, and four bodies recovered to date. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
The collapse happened around 3:30pm as crowds flocked to the area, a popular monsoon-season destination. An estimated 25 to 30 tourists who were on the bridge at that moment reportedly fell into the swollen river and have since been swept away.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis in a social media post on X said, "There has been an incident of bridge collapse in Maval. I have spoken to the Divisional Commissioner, Tehsildar and Police Commissioner. Some people have been injured and taken to the hospital. Some people are also trapped. The NDRF team is reaching there.
