Patna: A woman, along with her daughter, committed suicide after finding out that her son was a robber and that the police raided her house to arrest him.

The incident took place in Saran district of Bihar on Wednesday.

Unable to bear the shame, the woman, Manju Devi, killed herself soon after the police raided her home on Tuesday night and recovered Rs600,000 hidden in a corner of the house. The accused, Sonu Pandey, is in hiding.

Some five motorbike-borne robbers had looted Rs4 million in cash from a van which was on the way to deposit the money in bank ATMs on Monday in Saran district. Based on certain leads in the course of investigation, a police team raided the house of the woman on Monday to nab the accused, but he managed to escape.

During the raids, however, the police recovered Rs600,000, a bike used in the crime and a firearm. Subsequently, the police arrested the father of the accused Sonu Pandey.

The incident, however, shocked the family so much so that both the mother and the sister of the accused hanged themselves after writing a detailed suicide note. The police said the suicide note was apparently written by the sister of the accused.

In the note, the sister urged the police not to victimise her father saying the “last wish” of the person ending their life should be respected and fulfilled. “We wanted to lead our life with dignity in society, but that didn’t happen due to Sonu (her brother) who only brought insult to the family,” the girl wrote, adding her father tried hard to make her brother a good citizen, but did not succeed.

“His (brother’s) acts have smashed the dreams of my parents,” she said, adding the family should not be victimised for the fault committed by the son. She said the police and the officials would feel the pain of the family and requested that the photograph of her body should not be published in the newspaper.

The police have recovered more than Rs1.82 million out of the total looted amount of Rs4 million and have arrested three people in connection with the robbery case although Pandey remains absconding so far.

“The police have recovered Rs1.82 million of the total looted cash so far. We recovered Rs600,000 each from the house of three robbers and Rs28,500 from another robber,” additional director general of police Jitendra Singh Gangwar told the media. He added there would be a speedy trial.
