Thiruvananthapuram: A 30-year-old man’s suicide in Kerala — after Argentina lost to Croatia in the football World Cup — came as a total shock to his family members, who say they were hardly aware of the intensity of his love for Argentina captain Lionel Messi and his team.

Dinu Alex, from Arumanur near Ayarkunnam in Kottayam district, committed suicide by jumping into the Meenachil river that flows near his house, after Croatia swept aside Argentina 3-0 in their group match.

“There is nothing more left in this world for me to see. I am going to the depths of death. There is no responsibility for anyone in my death,” Alex wrote and signed the note before he left his home.

There were other scribbles in his book, including “I will do it”, and “after the Messiah, my [deity] is Messi”.

Some of his notes give the impression that he was more a Messi fan than a follower of the Argentina football team.

He had taken to serious worship of Messi after buying and reading the life story of Messi in 2015, and he even wrote Dinu ‘Messi’ Alex in his note book.

His family members knew that he had gone around different shops to buy a No 10 jersey of Argentina that Messi wears, ahead of the match, but even his parents Kottathil Alexander, mother Chinnamma and sister Divya were not aware he was such an intense follower of the Latin American soccer hero.

Alex had recently cleared a test conducted by the Kerala Public Service Commission, and was awaiting a job in government service.

Before taking his life, Alex had left the No 10 jersey and his mobile phone cover with a Messi picture on it, by the river bank.
