As the struggle to find jobs globally increases, job scams seem to be on the rise. Delhi Police arrested a gang from the Indian Capital city, who were fooling applicants from Nepal wanting to work in Canada.

As per the Indian news website www.indiatoday.in,” Delhi Police's Special Investigation Unit-I of Crime Branch busted a gang of scammers on Wednesday. The arrested accused include travel agents, middlemen, printers and a few others. The scammers used to target young people mostly from Nepal. They assured them of good jobs in Canada with a handsome payout. The gang members used to disappear after handing out fake visas to the job aspirants.”

What was their mode of operation?

They apparently had something like a recruitment agency going, wherein they accepted applications from job aspirants, all the while promising them hopes of a new life in Canada.

And part of that initial process was a certain amount that was charged. Following that the applicants came to Delhi with their documents including passports, which were taken by the agency.

They were told that the passports were required for visas to be affixed by the Canadian embassy.

What really happened?

They would then forge visa stickers and affix them into the passports. All this was done within an office set up in the city. They would then take pictures of the visa page and send it via WhatsApp. This was followed by a request for the Nepalese applicants to send across more money, which they did.

Once that happened, they disappeared. The applicants could not contact them.

How were they caught?

Finally, three of the applicants complained to Nepal authorities, following which the Nepal embassy contacted the Crime Branch of Delhi police. The three people, as reported by indiatoday.in are Sushil Joshi, Keshab Singh Bisht and Deepak. They had lost over Dh72,273 or Rs14 lakhs.

Delhi police started an investigation, on September 5, they arrested the first accused Jitender. Following his interrogation, all the members of the gang were arrested. There is no information available if the money has been recovered, as yet. But, the police found over 30 passports in their possession.
