A 14-year boy in the Indian state of Odisha was beaten to death by his friend's mother for allegedly stealing Rs500 (Dh25). The shocking incident happened in Kiapanoposhi village, in the Mayurbhanj district, police said on Wednesday.
Rajan Behera, a student of grade seven, had gone to his friend's house on Tuesday. After spending time with his friend, he returned home.
Police said that his friend’s mother, who was away when Rajan visited their house, returned to find that her currency note worth Rs500 was missing, Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The woman first asked her son about the money, and then called Rajan, when she learned about his visit during her absence, an investigating officer, said.
He added: “The woman identified as 36-year-old Sasmita Behera, allegedly thrashed the boy with a stick.”
Rajan went back home and later succumbed to his injuries.
After being informed by the villagers, police registered a case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code on Wednesday.
They sent the boy’s body for post mortem and arrested the woman based on the preliminary investigation, the police official added.
