India: Delhi policewoman shot dead by cop for rejecting marriage proposal

The police officer shot the victim thrice in the head

New Delhi: A policeman allegedly shot a woman police officer dead in Delhi, India, after she refused to marry him, on Friday night near Rohini East Metro station.

Reports stated that the incident took place at around 9.30pm. The victim, Preeti Ahlawat, was reportedly walking home from the train station when she was shot three times, according to a report by India-based television news channel, NDTV.

The alleged perpetrator was identified as Dipanshu Rathi who was Ahlawat’s batchmate at a police academy.

The NDTV report stated that Rathi shot Ahlawat in the head and she died immediately. After the shooting took place, Rathi allegedly committed suicide.

Police personnel reached the location and took Ahlawat’s body for an autopsy. CCTV footage of the area had been collected to identify the shooter.

"Three cartridges have been found from the spot," a senior police officer told NDTV.

"We found Dipanshu's body from his car in Murthal in Sonipat. The vehicle was locked from inside with the headlights on," the officer was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Marriage proposal rejected

Ahlawat was a sub-inspector from Sonipat, a city in the Indian state of Haryana.

According to police officials, Rathi, also a sub-inspector, was in love with the policewoman but that she was not interested in him and turned down his marriage proposal.
