Hyderabad: In a shocking incident fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit of a children’s hospital in Hyderabad late on Sunday night claiming the life of an infant and injuring three other kids.

Fire broke out in the private Shine Hospital in LB Nagar area of the city creating panic in the hospital. Before the hospital staff could respond, an infant undergoing treatment in an incubator was killed and three other children suffered burns. The affected children were immediately shifted to another corporate hospital.

Four-month-old Ramesh from Suryapet, who was in an incubator, died of burns and suffocation. There were 42 children in the incubator section on the fourth floor of the children’s hospital when the fire broke out and timely arrival of the police rescue personnel averted a bigger disaster.

The panic stricken parents and the hospital staff alerted the police and the police personnel rescued the children by breaking the glasses of the ICU and incubator section.

Policemen also vacated the children undergoing treatment as in patient in other wards on second and third floor of the hospital.

Fire brigade also rushed to the hospital and brought the fire under control. The hospital was situated right opposite to the area police station. Police booked a case of criminal negligence against hospital management and was investigating the case. Preliminary investigation just that electric short circuit was the cause of the fire.

The parents of children told the visiting area MLA Sudheer Reddy that two days they had complained of leakage of gas from an Oxygen cylinder but no action was taken.
