Thiruvananthapuram: The Syro Malabar Church in Kerala has taken a decision discouraging weddings in churches on Sundays, because the Church believes that it adversely affects the catechism classes for children on Sundays.

A pastoral letter in this context by Cardinal George Alencherry was displayed in churches on Sunday, explaining the logic behind such a decision. Weddings in churches on Sundays are normally held past 12 noon so as not to interfere with the catechism classes, but the church seems to be of the opinion that it is best to avoid Sunday weddings.

Sunday religious instruction ought to begin at 8.30am with Mass, the church suggests, and the circular points to the need for children being impressed about the importance of Sunday Mass.
