Police arrest husband-to-be over brawl with guests on his wedding day
Patna: A bride in Bihar turned back the groom’s marriage procession after he reached the wedding drunk and behaved improperly with the guests — the latest in a series of such incidents where women have shown rare courage to send the grooms packing for lacking in basic courtesies.
The incident took place at Navratanpur village under Khagaul police station in Patna district on Thursday.
The police have arrested the groom, charging him with assaulting the guests.
As per reports, the marriage of Renu Kumari, daughter of Vishnu Rai from Navratanpur village in Patna district had been fixed with Dhannu Kumar, son of Sushil Rai from neighbouring Chakmusa village in the same district.
On the fateful evening, a marriage procession reached Navratanpur village, but the bride was shocked to find the groom had come to the wedding drunk. Her patience ran out finally when she came to know that the groom along with others in the marriage procession had indulged in a large-scale brawl and also assaulted her brother, aunt and other family members under the influence of alcohol.
Piqued at his behaviour, she refused to marry the drunken groom and ordered the marriage party to return immediately.
The bride’s family also filed a case against the groom and 25 others for assaulting guests.
Reports said when the groom came back to his senses, he hurriedly apologised for his behaviour and requested solemnisation of the marriage citing his prestige in the society. However, the bride refused to budge from her stand.
More trouble was in store for the groom.
Witnesses said before he could return from the ceremony, the local police reached the spot and arrested the groom. He was sent to jail on Friday.
“The groom’s side attacked us again on Friday evening. They threatened us with dire consequences if we did not withdraw the case against them,” a relative of the bride told local media.
