Guwahati: Police said on Thursday that a bomb explosion at a building site in northwest India killed a construction worker who was sleeping there.

Police Superintendent A.K. Jalajit said six other workers injured in the blast on Wednesday night had been taken to a hospital in the Manipur state capital of Imphal.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast in the town of Thoubal near Imphal. Police suspect any one of at least 17 separatist groups that often stage hit-and-run attacks in Manipur.

Last week, a crude bomb killed two people at a bus stop in Imphal. Another bombing at a market place injured five.

The rebels groups say New Delhi ignores the local population, most of which is ethnically closer to groups in Myanmar and China than the rest of India.
