Vasanthi Cheruveettil, 59-year-old Kannur resident, took over four months to prepare
Dubai: When you are nearing 60, planning for your retirement life will be among the top priorities.
But not for this 59-year-old tailor from Kerala. Despite facing objection from family members and friends, she defied age to successfully trek to the Everest Base. Interestingly she trained for this entire mission by watching videos on YouTube.
With sheer determination, Vasanthi Cheruveettil, a resident of Kannur, achieved this remarkable feat and reached the South Base Camp on February 23. Draping in a traditional Kerala 'kasavu' saree over her trekking gear, she proudly waved the Indian flag. She began her trek from Surke, Nepal, on February 15.
Cheruveettil dedicated over four months to detailed planning and self-preparation for her journey.
Her rigorous daily schedule consisted of three-hour morning walks, trekking boot training to build endurance, and evening treks covering 5-6 kilometres with companions.
She also learned Hindi to ensure smooth communication during the trek and studied YouTube tutorials to grasp fundamental trekking techniques.
Her journey to Everest Base Camp was never easy. Bad weather led to the cancellation of her flight to Lukla, forcing her to find an alternative route via Surke with the help of a German couple she met in Nepal. But that didn't stop her, and she kept moving ahead. During the journey she met trekkers from across the world.
The trek itself was grueling where she walked for six to seven hours daily, taking frequent breaks to avoid exhaustion. “I needed more time, so I walked slowly, using a stick. Every few steps, I paused to take at least five breaths to avoid shivering and exhaustion,” she told Manorama.
She financed her travels through her tailoring business. Her sons Vineeth and Vivek also occasionally support her. With Everest Base Camp conquered, she now has her sights set on her next dream destination to conquer the Great Wall of China.
