Dhaka: Authorities in Bangladesh are investigating alleged cases of anthrax in humans after 38 people have reportedly been infected in the north of the country.

Nurul Islam Talukder, the chief government health official in Sirajganj district, said on Saturday they collected samples and sent them to a laboratory in the capital, Dhaka, for confirmation.

He said the people fell sick after two sick cows possibly infected by anthrax bacteria were slaughtered, and later the meat was sold to villagers.

The infection has caused wound-like lesions in the body, he said. Usually the infected parts start rotting if not treated, he said.

Talukder said all the cases are related to the cows.
