Kabul: An Afghan commerce ministry official said that Iran has banned fuel exports to the country, a move that has left about 3,000 fuel trucks stranded at the border for over two weeks.
Iran has not officially confirmed the move, which appears to reflect its concerns that the fuel is being funneled to Nato forces fighting the Taliban.
Mozammil Shinwari, the head of the Afghan commerce ministry's international relations department, said on Wednesday that the Afghan government received no official notice or explanation from Tehran.
Shinwari said that he and other customs officials have been told that the decision came from Iranian security officials. No explanation was provided.
