France’s Macron to visit Greenland as Trump eyes the island
Trip is set before leaders of the Group of Seven nations meet in Canada for a summit
French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Greenland this month, the self-ruling territory of Denmark that US President Donald Trump has said he wants to take over.
Macron will meet with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, to discuss security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic, climate change, critical minerals and European sovereignty, according to his office. The trip is set for June 15, before leaders of the Group of Seven nations including Macron meet in Canada for a summit.
Greenland has a strategic location straddling the North Atlantic and the Arctic, as well as vast stores of critical minerals and fossil fuels. The world’s largest island, it is already home to a US air base and radar station used for detecting missile threats and monitoring space. Greenlanders and Danes have opposed Trump’s plan to take control of the island.

The US president has cited US security as a reason to acquire the territory and criticized Denmark for underinvesting in defense on the island. The Nordic country has recently committed to boosting military investment. A decades-old treaty already allows the US to establish more military bases in Greenland.
