Charleston, South Carolina: An Air Force official says the pilot of an F-16 fighter jet that collided with a small plane over South Carolina has been taken to a base for observation.

Lt. Jenny Hyden at Shaw Air Force Base did not disclose the pilot's condition.

The Federal Aviation Administration says in a statement that the fighter jet collided with a Cessna around late Tuesday morning about 11 miles (17 kilometers) north of Charleston.

Shaw Air Force Base said in a statement that a team of investigators would look into the cause of the crash.

There were no apparent injuries on the ground, according to a Berkeley County, South Carolina, official.

Crews have found the debris from the small Cessna plane involved in the collision and are searching for victims and working to identify the passengers.

It was not immediately known how many people were on board the smaller plane or if any of them survived.

The Shaw Air Force base has confirmed that one of their F-16s crashed near Joint Base Charleston, but the pilot on board is accounted for.
