Dubai: As the scorching summer in the UAE draws to a close, residents are looking forward to a break from the intense heat and humidity. The end of the season can be viewed from both a meteorological and an astronomical perspective, with both indicators pointing to a gradual shift towards cooler weather in the coming weeks.

The meteorological shift

Meteorological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle and are divided into three-month periods. In the UAE, August marks the final month of the meteorological summer. While the middle of the month is expected to bring heightened humidity, which will make the high temperatures feel even more pronounced, a change is on the horizon.

A key signal of this transition is the appearance of the Suhail star. According to Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, the rising of this star at dawn is a traditional sign of the end of the most extreme heat. After its appearance, which is expected around late August, temperatures will begin to ease and drop slightly during the early hours of the day.

The astronomical end of summer

The astronomical seasons are defined by the Earth's position in its orbit around the sun. This year, the astronomical summer in the UAE officially began on June 21 with the summer solstice. It will conclude on Monday, September 22, with the autumnal equinox following on Tuesday, September 23. This means the 2025 summer season will have lasted for a total of 93 days.

Throughout this period, the UAE has experienced temperatures ranging from 42°C to 49°C, accompanied by dry conditions and active winds. As the autumnal equinox approaches, these conditions will begin to transition, leading to a more moderate climate.
