Western classical music fans are in for a treat this evening when the UAE Children's String Orchestra perform their fourth show outside the country. Fresh from last month's performance in Kuwait, which has been chosen as the Arab Cultural Capital for 2001, the budding musicians, aged between seven and 16, will display their talent at the Al Frah Ballroom of the Grand Hayat Muscat, the Sultanate's largest five-star hotel built four years ago.
Proceeds of the concert will go to the state-run Oman Charitable Organisation. Tickets are 7 riyals and gates will open at 7.30pm. The concert, which is expected to attract royal family members, ministers and ambassadors, has been patronised by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the National Bank of Oman in order to promote a cause.
The orchestra, which was founded in the UAE in 1994 by Riaz Kudsi, who started learning violin from his father at the age of 8, consists of children from different nationalities such as the UAE, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Britain, Ireland, France, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Sri Lanka and New Guinea.
The orchestra, designed to create a classical musical awareness and promote the multi-culture society in the UAE, performed last year in France and Czech Republic. The orchestra has gradually expanded to 50 gifted children.
