‘We don’t want them to shy away from contributing because of trolls,’ Twitter says
Dubai: Social-media platform Twitter launched a new hastag #PositionofStrength on Tuesday at the Women’s Forum Dubai to help women in the region speak out on issues by giving them a global voice.
Specific sessions on the hashtag will be especially designed for women in the Middle East and North Africa region, the firm told Gulf News at the forum.
“We truly believe in the democratising nature of the platform – Twitter can be a tool of empowerment for women to speak out from a position of strength online,” said Kira O’Connor, Twitter’s Head of Trust & Safety Outreach for EMEA.
“To that end, we are excited to be rolling out this program in Dubai, followed by Singapore and New York City in the coming months.”
The firm said in its announcement that, “Dubai is a fitting city to host the 2016 event with new milestones set over the past twelve months when it comes to gender equality, including the formation of a women’s empowerment strategy and a dedicated council to create increasing gender balance in employment.”
Twitter pointed out that it has a global community of 300 million people, a powerful tool to effect change.
“We want women across the Gulf region to be able to communicate in a safe, secure, and enjoyable environment online. We need and cherish women’s voices on our platform. We don’t want them to shy away from contributing because of trolls or those that seek to stifle their voices. Instead, we want women to animate the Twitter platform with their unique and compelling stories and to enrich the global discourse that evolves on the internet in real-time,” the firm said on Tuesday.
